So basically, if you have 3.5Mn pesos, you could have a 100 sqm luxury finished home or a 140 sqm standard finished home or a 233 sqm bare finished home. You could also allocate your budget to specific parts of the house you’d like to be finished better.

Does that mean I should only spend what can I afford? Well, yes! And… no. Whenever I have my first meeting with a prospective client, the budget is always at the top of their mind. “Ang mahal.” “Magkano?” “This is the budget.” In a capitalist society, it’s easy to revolve the conversation around the budget.

However, every time I open these initial client meetings, I never start with the budget. Instead, I consider the client first and attempt to unpack what the client’s needs and intents are.

Because one thing I noticed in my career is that the price changes what we can afford, but not our aspirations.

In starting with intent, we consider first, the why’s of what we do. With creativity, collaboration, and a strong mission, we can then figure out how’s and what to do.

But, of course. there are still limits. Architects are creative, but we’re not magicians.
